Meaningful connections, one letter at a time
In a world of instant messaging, a handwritten note can be a powerful thing. It offers space to reflect, share stories, and connect in a deeper, more intentional way. This project revives the tradition of pen pals while nurturing real and rewarding friendships across Brighton and Hove.
We believe meaningful connection starts with shared interests, curiosity, and conversation. When we match people, we focus on personality, hobbies, interests, and what people hope to get from the experience. Matches may be between people of different ages, backgrounds, and life experiences, but the aim is always the same: creating enjoyable, mutual connections where both people look forward to hearing from one another.
While some people join the project because they may be feeling isolated or would value more connection in their lives, the service is not based solely on age or circumstance. We encourage everyone taking part to approach letter writing with an open mind and a willingness to get to know someone new through shared interests, stories, and conversation.
Guidelines to help with writing your letter
Respect and kindness
- Please write with care, kindness, and consideration for your pen pal’s experiences and feelings.
- Avoid language or content that could be upsetting, discriminatory, or offensive.
- Sensitive topics (e.g. politics, religion, personal beliefs) should only be discussed if both people feel comfortable.
Consistency
- Aim to write at least once a month, or more frequently with shorter letters if you prefer.
- Let your pen pal know if you expect any delay in replying.
- If you would like to pause or end your participation, please contact the Project Coordinator rather than simply stopping correspondence.
- We can support you and your pen pal with ending the connection appropriately.
Privacy and confidentiality
- Please treat what your pen pal shares with you as private and do not share their letters or personal information with others.
- The exception is where you have a concern about their safety, wellbeing or the appropriateness of the correspondence. In these circumstances, please share the relevant information with Together Co.
- Please avoid including highly personal or sensitive identifying information about yourself.

Introduction
Introduce yourself in a friendly, simple way. Share why you joined the project. Ask a few light questions (e.g. hobbies, favourite activities).
Topics to include
Your hobbies, interests, and favourite activities; a little about your day-to-day life or any recent experiences you would like to share; or questions to get to know your match better.
Tips on receiving and responding to letters
Acknowledgment
Let your match know you received their letter and express your appreciation. Respond thoughtfully to any questions or topics they have shared in their letter. Build the connection gradually over time.
Themes and prompts
Every so often we will send you a theme or prompt to inspire your letters. These are optional but can be a fun way to keep the conversation fresh. Feel free to incorporate the theme in your own way or create your own topics.
Support and feedback
The project co-ordinator is available for any questions or support you may need. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you encounter any issues or need support. We will periodically check in to ensure the experience is positive and fulfilling for both parties. Please provide honest feedback to help us improve the project.
