Leila & Halima’s Story
Leila loves to be social and is a talented writer and gardener, but she finds it incredibly difficult to get outside due to her disability and anxieties. Halima, a Together Co volunteer befriender has been visiting Leila for two years. Together they chat, catch up on the world and have a good laugh.

Leila
There are lots of obstacles that stop me going outside. Access for a disabled person is difficult in Brighton, and steep roads can make me feel unsafe in my wheelchair. I get anxious and have panic attacks, and feel like the world is passing me by. But I’m very social, I need people around me. Halima brings me a lot of joy and makes me feel worthwhile, she connects me to the outside world and I feel included in her life too. No matter how ill or sad she feels, Halima always pops in to say hi, and she’s always so gentle and sincere. Everybody deserves a Halima.
If you’re feeling lonely or isolated, speak to someone you feel confident with. Quite often it’s hard to reach out or do something for ourselves because we don’t feel worthy of that support – but you are worthy, and you deserve as much happiness as you can get.
