We are pleased to announce that Together Co Vaccine Buddies is accepting self-referrals, as well as referrals from health and social care staff.

Our Vaccine Buddies can accompany and reassure people in Brighton and Hove who are anxious about attending their vaccination appointment. The Buddy will call the person ahead of the appointment to introduce themselves and will then meet them at the relevant vaccination centre – this includes Brighton Racecourse, the Brighton Centre, and mobile/walk-in Vaccination Units. A phone call after the appointment will also be offered.

We ask for the following information about the person who needs support:

  • The person’s name, age, address and mobile number
  • A summary of the support required
  • The date and venue of the vaccination appointment if already arranged – we prefer 5 days’ notice if possible
  • Anything the Buddy needs to know that would help them be sensitive to the person’s situation.

Please note that we cannot offer transport or mobility support.

Our Buddies will have a letter showing that they are from Together Co that they can show to vaccination centre staff and the person referred.

To access our Vaccine Buddies service, please email socialprescribing.togetherco@nhs.net with the title Vaccine Buddies. You can also call on 01273 229 002 and leave a message.

Case study

Daisy has a fear of needles and struggles to go out alone. She was so anxious about her COVID vaccination that she missed her first appointment.

Our buddying coordinator contacted Daisy and walked her through what to expect at the vaccination centre. She explained that a buddy would be outside the centre ten minutes before Daisy’s appointment so that they could meet and go in together. Daisy arrived at the centre confident that someone would be with her the whole time – including during the 15-minute observation period following her jab – to reassure her and guide her through the process.

After Daisy’s appointment, our buddy waited with her until her taxi arrived to take her home. Daisy described the service as “really helpful”, adding: “Thanks, I really appreciated it!”
